Run, Hide, Fight

No one expects to find themselves in an active shooter situation, but in the event that there is on, the WCU community should be prepared to RUN – HIDE – FIGHT.

Run

  • Have an escape route and plan in mind.
  • Leave your belongings behind.
  • Keep your hands visible.
  • Call WCUPD or 911 or use the LiveSafe App (need to find the webpage for the link) when you are in a safe place.

Hide

  • Take time now to learn the different ways to seek shelter in your building.
  • If you can’t escape, hide in an area out of the shooter’s view, and behind something solid if possible.
  • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors.
  • Silence your cell phone and other devices.
  • Keep it simple. Hiding could be as simple as locking a door.

Fight

  • Fighting is a last resort to be used only when your life is in imminent danger.
  • Attempt to incapacitate the active shooter.
  • Find an object to use as a weapon, such as a fire extinguisher or chair. Be creative.
  • Work as a team with someone else if possible.

Report it before it happens!

If someone is demonstrating concerning behavior or making comments of committing violence, contact WCU PD immediately. If you are concerned about behavior, but there is no immediate threat to the WCU community, you may submit a Student Concern report to Student Affairs.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Run Hide Fight model.
