Online Mentor Training for Teachers

Induction is a critical phase in the development of a teacher. The first years anchor a teacher's sense of professionalism, the belief in the ability of all students to achieve academic growth, an understanding of the importance of collaborative practice, and a commitment to instructional and professional growth.

Online Mentor Training for the 21st Century offers current information and strategies to prospective and current mentors so they can provide the highest quality support to North Carolina's newest teachers. The module consists of five self-paced sessions, which most participants can complete the five modules in 15 hours. The culminating activity is a written summary and reflection of an observation of their beginning teacher.

DESIGN 
Online Mentor Training module consists of five sessions which cover the following topics:

• Introduction to the new North Carolina Mentor Program
• Who benefits from mentor training
• Traits of a high performance mentor
• Traits of today's beginning teachers
• Working with adult learners
• Phases of first year teaching
• Strategies to support beginning teachers
• Understanding the school culture and climate
• Strategies for coaching and collaboration
• Observation techniques
• Helping novice teachers become reflective practitioners

Each session has several activities which include readings, completing inventories, responding to scenarios, viewing videos, and developing support strategies. Most participants can complete the five modules in 15 hours. The culminating activity is a written summary and reflection of an observation of their beginning teacher.

DELIVERY

• The training is online through Canvas.
• Sessions offered every six weeks or as needed.
• Participants will register for the module through WCU's office of Continuing Education.

GOALS
Online mentor training offers current information and strategies to prospective and current mentors so they can provide the highest quality support to North Carolina's newest teachers. At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:

• identify the need for an effective mentoring program for novice teachers
• begin to understand and make connections between the NC Professional Teaching Standards Commission and the new NC Teacher Evaluation Process
• account for characteristics of the novice teacher and implications for the mentor to ensure success
• recognize and practice the attitudes, behaviors, and skills of effective mentors that offer support to beginning teachers..
• identify ways to support beginning teachers in their relationships with students, families, the school, and community
• support beginning teachers as they engage students in learning the content
• consider ways to help beginning teachers become reflective practitioners
