The pandemic undoubtedly impacted Community & Belongingness. Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, our mission was to reignite that spirit of togetherness and connection.
Mental health and wellness are crucial facets of overall well-being that demand attention and advocacy. By shedding light on these topics, we not only destigmatize discussions surrounding mental health but also empower individuals to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed.
On the tail of Sustainability and the Environment, it made perfect sense for the 2020-2021 campus theme to be WATER.
Sustainability is something that affects everyone in some way. During Western Carolina University’s 2019-20 academic year, it will affect WCU students as the new campus learning theme.
WCU's 2018-2019 campus theme focused on what was discussed on campus around the issues of climate, as well as to explore new and old concepts of America.
WCU's 2017-2018 campus theme focused on the heritage and tradition of a proud people permeate the very ground upon which the university is built.
WCU's 2015-2017 campus theme introduced the WCU community and the Western North Carolina region to the contextual and lived realities that shape contemporary views of the continent of Africa.
The 2014-2015 interdisciplinary theme increased campus and community awareness of the historical, social and cultural impacts that have shaped North Carolina into what it is today and what it will become in the future.
The 2013-2014 academic year focused on the Decade of the 1960s, building on the historical focus with WCU's 125 year anniversary. It provided a great opportunity for students to learn about their subjects of study from a different time period.
WCU's 2012-2013 campus theme helped students connect their role as university citizens to their learning and experiences as they engage in civil dialogue and creatively express new understandings.
2011-2012: Through a year's worth of engaged teaching, learning, service, and creative and scholarly opportunities centered on poverty, the WCU community developed a better understanding of the root causes and consequences of poverty.
The 2010-2011 interdisciplinary learning event will focus on health and wellness, community outreach, research and creative scholarship, service learning and advocacy.
