OAR Coaching Services

OAR Coaching Services assist students in identifying and achieving their goals as they move
forward in their college career and beyond. The coach serves as a guide to help students build
skills to navigate transitions, become empowered to overcome challenges, and apply strategies
to successfully achieve their professional and personal goals.

Coaching is available to any student who is registered with the OAR; however, students
with ADHD can participate in a specific program called ACCESS.

ACCESS (Accessing Campus Connections and Empowering Student Success) is
a coaching approach that supports students with diagnosed or suspected ADHD
and features:
     • An 8-week group session format in addition to individualized coaching
        appointments
     • ADHD Knowledge that is research-based and presented in a neuro-friendly
        format
     • Adaptive Thinking techniques based on cognitive behavioral principles
     • Behavioral Strategies designed to maximize learning, enhance executive
        function, and utilize campus resources

Students have the option to continue individual coaching sessions for a second
semester to help reinforce the ACCESS concepts and maintain progress towards
achieving their goals.

Quick Facts About Coaching

  • Coaching is voluntary. The student initiates and actively participates in the process.
  • Coaching focuses on concrete skills and strategies. Coaches work with students to develop skills and may also refer students to campus resources for additional training based on their individual needs.
  • Coaches ask questions without judgement. Together, the student and coach design how the student will accomplish their goal and be held accountable.
  • Coaches do not provide therapy to students. To inquire about a counseling appointment with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), call 828.227.7469 or stop by the office (225 Bird Building). The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Coaches do not tell the student what to do. The student and coach work through the coaching process together to determine a plan for how the student can make positive changes and progress towards accomplishing their goal.
