About Tutoring Services

The Writing and Learning Commons (WaLC) and Mathematics Tutoring Center (MTC) function within the Division of Student Success. WaLC/MTC staff members include a full-time WaLC Director, WaLC Associate Director, WaLC Assistant Director, MTC Director, and Administrative Support Associates. In addition to the full-time professional staff, the WaLC/MTC employs between 125-150 student employees who serve as course tutors, math tutors, writing tutors, writing fellows, office assistants, and academic skills consultants.

Mission:

The Writing and Learning Commons (WaLC) and Mathematics and Computer Science Tutoring Center (MTC) seek to create a supportive community where students are empowered to achieve their academic goals. Our peer educators promote evidence-based strategies for effective learning in an environment where effort and mistakes are seen as vital components of the learning process. By partnering with faculty, we identify exceptional student leaders based on their disciplinary knowledge and their interest in helping others. The WaLC and MTC also provide comprehensive training that allows peer educators to develop their professional competencies, enhance their learning, and gain transferrable skills that will serve them well beyond graduation.

Goals:

  • Support faculty members’ efforts to maintain academic rigor
  • Build students’ confidence in their ability to achieve academic success
  • Promote students’ intellectual versatility and flexibility across the disciplines
