Faculty-Led Programming

As a Faculty member of Western Carolina University, you have the unique opportunity to create a course which integrates seamlessly with the curriculum on Western's campus but provides cultural and environmental immersion abroad. This allows a Faculty-Led Travel Course to relate to student life and campus culture while providing a higher level of interaction between students and faculty.

Kickstart your planning

Check out the Faculty Led Travel AY 2023/2024 session slides from our February information sessions. Get a quick intro to planning your course, starting the applications, and communicating with students.

Couldn't make one of the sessions or have additional questions?  Meet with us one-on-one.

Let's get started!

There are four types of Faculty-Led Travel Courses:

  • Courses taught in domestic locations across the United States and surrounding territories
  • Overseas courses taught in foreign countries
  • Faculty teaching courses abroad at partner universities
  • Language intensive or other courses taught at 3rd Party sites
  • Click the "Start Today" button at right to express interest in planning a faculty-led program.

You aren't commiting to running a trip, this just gets you access to all the planning documents and information! We will only follow up with you if you start submitting documents.

  • Accept the Canvas course invitation sent by our office
  • Review the application steps and documentation
  • Submit the Steps 1 - 2b (Program Proposal, Detailed Itenerary, Policy 100 Form) by the application deadline. See deadlines below.

Proposed programs must exist completely inside one of these three date ranges.
Fall: First day of class - 14 calendar days following the last day of Fall exams
Spring: 14 calendar days before classes start - last day of Spring exams
Summer: All days inbetween the end of Spring exams and the start of Fall classes

Trips are not allowed to span two seperate designations due to conflicts with course creation, student registration, and financial aid regulations. Date guidelines are not credit dependant, as not-for-credit programs still involve student registration. Not certain if your trip will qualify? Please reach out to us for assistance.
