INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCE

A first-generation college student who first set foot on WCU’s campus in 1983 and has never left, rising through the ranks from incoming freshman to serve as the institution’s second-in-command, has created an endowed scholarship fund in honor of her Jamaica-born parents.

TEACHING BEHIND THE SCREEN

The traditional student experience at Western Carolina University saw 18- to 22-year-olds strolling across campus, passing classmates on the way to a lecture, meeting with professors in the hallway or during their office hours, grabbing a bite to eat in the cafeteria and hanging out in residence halls.

For the son of a small-town Baptist preacher who went to college to become a classically trained pianist, only to find his professional career take an unexpected change of tempo into academia, the June 23 memorial service for Western Carolina University Chancellor David O. Belcher hit just the right note.

Faculty Senate to hold Aug. 29 meeting at University Center

A regular business meeting of WCU’s Faculty Senate will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the Multipurpose Room at A.K. Hinds University Center.

STAR TRACK

Susan Gardner Mayhorn ’93, one of Western Carolina’s most decorated track and field student-athletes of all time, was inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame class of 2018 in March, becoming WCU’s first-ever inductee.

ACADEMIC HOMERUN

Western Carolina softball player Kassandra Flores ’18 was named the 2018 recipient of the Sports Medicine Institute Scholarship by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in April.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Catamount Athletic Complex in May, with the Catamount men wrapping up their third straight title and the women winning their third in four years.

HOOP DREAMS

Mark Prosser probably could have been a head coach long before he was named Western Carolina University’s 18th men’s basketball coach in March. Actually, he was for one season at Brevard College in 2011-12 before circumstances led to him becoming an assistant at Winthrop for six seasons.

COURT RULING

On the tennis court, Jordan Strickland is a focused, intense, yet level-headed player for Western Carolina University. Nothing seems to rattle the junior.
